FOR THE ROSS SEA. —The whaling ship N. T. Nielsen Alonso sailed yesterday from Hobart for the Ross Sea, with 30 Tasmanians as seamen, including university undergraduates. This in the ship’s third trip to the Antarctic. She will probably link up with Sir Hubert Wilkins’s aerial expedition, nnd has taken supplies of oil and airplane parts for Sir Hubert. COST OF LIVING. —A slight rise in the cost of living in Britain is indicated in a gazette issued by the /'.nistry of Labour. This says the average level of retail prices on October 1 was about per cent, above that of July. 1914, ns compared with 65 per cent, a month ngo and 67 per cent, a year ago.— British Official Wireless. FIGHT WITH BURGLAR.—Mr. Ainsley Cox. a bookmaker, of Auburn, n suburb of Sydney, was confronted by a burglar early yesterday morning. The thief was apparently aware that Mr. Cox had a large sum of money in the house after yesterday’s pony races. Mr. Cox was struck by a slingshot and then by an electric torch. The thief decamped without finding the money. AIRMEN IN PERIL. —A military observation balloon, in which were a captain and a sub-lieutenant, broke loose at Nevers, France, and disappeared at a great height.
