“BOOKIES" IN SMALL WAY
COUSINS FINED £3O PREMISES OFF QUEEN STREET Described by Chief - Detective Hammond as “bookies in a small way,” William Kawite Wynyard and Sydney Montague Wynyard appeared at the Police Court this morning. They were charged with keeping the premises known as No. 7 New Zealand Mining Chambers, Exchange Lane, as a common gaming house. Mr. F. D. McLiver pleaded guilty on accused’s behalf and explained that Sydney was the principal in the business, his cousin having only recently entered his employ. •‘‘They have not done much good,” commented Chief-Detective Hammond. “They have been making books for several months and it is only an ordinary ca-e of taking risks in an illegal business.” “As they started in a small way, I shall start the fines similarly,” said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., as he fined Sydney £2O and William £lO. “I am afraid we shall have them back again,” said Mr. Hammond as the two men left the courtroom.
