There should be some spectacular contests witnessed at Trentham tomorrow and on Monday, for all the best horses, are engaged, and the acceptances for all eight events averages over 20. The Wellesley Stakes is one of the most interesting items on the card for the opening day to-morrow, for it will mark the second appearance of Gold Tinge, the A.J.C. Breeders’ Plate winner. There is a good field in the two big handicaps, in which the class lacjvs nothing. On the second day the Harcourt Cup, li miles, at weiglit-for-age, will be the main attraction, and this, too. should give spectators something to enthuse over. King Smock is being asked to do something big to-morroAV in taking on the best of them in the Cup. But just wait for the second day! He rarely fails to cop at Te and if he does on this occasion then it can be taken as a sure sign that he has finished. * <« * The long straight at Avondale saw Komak finishing strongly on each day. He is far from a good one, is Komak, but the opposition is so weak in his race, the Clarkin Hack, to-morow that one might almost be tempted to invest half a sovereign on liis chance. He has one redeeming feature —and one only—he can finish well. * * • The track at Te Rapa promises to be soft, so here we have Kingfield to repeat his performance last time on this course. He showed good form at Avondale in the heavy ground, finishing third each day Moariri and Silvermine, and neither is engaged on this occasion. It looks really good. * * * Nancy Lee put in a good burst of speed jn the straight the final day at Ellerslie last week, and on that showing she is fast coming into form that enabled her to finish second in the last Railway Handicap. She is not averse to a soft track, either.
