FIREMEN RESIGN

OBJECTION TO OFFICER DISPUTE WITH FIRE BOARD (From Our Own Correspondent) WAIHI, Wednesday. Eleven members of the Waihi Volunteer Fire Brigade decided last evening to tender their resignations as, a protest against the local fire board overruling their recommendation for the appointment of a deputy-superinten-dent. When Mr. F. W. Stamp resigned from the position of superintendent some time ago, owing to his regular work clashing with his duties as superintendent. Mr. W. Roberts, deputysuperintendent, was appointed in his place. The board then asked the brigade to nominate a man for the position of deputy-superintendent. By a majority of nine votes to five a member was nominated. The board, however, overruled this . and appointed another man to the position. The brigade sought to have this decision altered, but the board refused the request, and now the 11 members, in the belief that they are not getting a fair deal, have resigned. Although the brigade members admit that the law allows the board to appoint its officers, they claim that, as they give, a lot of valuable time to the work and receive next to nothing for it, they should be allowed some say in the matter. If the trouble is not soon settled Waihi may be in a sorry plight, as there are only five members left to carry on the work in cace of fire.
