FRANKLIN NEWS

NEW WHARF FOR MIRANDA The menthly meeting of the Franklin County Council was held yesetrday, Mr. J. N. Massey presiding. The Valuation Department intimated that the capital valuation for 1928 was £5,813,740, as against £5,456,698 in 1921. The unimproved value stood at £3,185,242 end £3,701,782 respectively, while the improved values were £2,628,498 and £1.784,916. Following the request of a number of Drury residents, it was decided to take steps to raise a loan of £SOO, to be subsidised by the Government on a £1 for £1 basis, for the metalling of Fitzgerald’s and connecting roads. In connection with the proposal to dedicate additional land as an access from he Opaheke station to the Hunua-Papa-kura main highway, the Public Works Department advised the council to insist on a chain-wide road in place of the half-chain one. In view of future subdivision of adjoining properties, it was decided to advise the ratepayers concerned of the suggestion, and to ask them to indemnify the council against any compensation claims, in which case the road would be formed and metalled. The Public Works Department intimated that £12,973 had been allocated for county roads, of which sum £7,000 would be available this year. Access roads to outlying districts were not included. It was reported that the Public Works Department proposed to vote £2,529 toward the cost of a flood relief scheme in the Mangatawhiri Valley, and the ratepayers would have to provide £1,841. The matter is to be placed before the interested ratepayers.

The tender of Mr. W. Forsyth, Bays-wa-ter, of £829 2s 4d for the erection of the Miranda Wharf was accepted. Advice was received from the PublicWorks Department to the effect that it proposed to improve the Great South Koad from the Mangatawhiri stream to the Mercer town district northern boundary, which work included the construction of a bridge and approaches to the Mangatawhiri stream.
