THROWN UNDER TRAIN
GIRL'S FOOT CRUSHED MIRACULOUS ESCAPE Press Association INVERCARGILL. Wednesday. As the result of an accident at tlie Edendale station this morning, Mavis Craig, aged 13, must have her leg amputated. The girl, who was to travel to Invercargill, ran up as the train was pulling into the platform, and threw two satchels on the platform of the rear carriage. Following this up she caught hold not of the first guard rail of the platform, but of the second, and was thrown down on to the line between the carriage and the guard’s van. She was turned over twice and her right foot was crushed. Railway officials state it is miraculous she was not killed instantly. The train was held at the station until a doctor from Wyndham arrived, and it was decided to take the girl to Invercargill, where she was admitted to the Southland Hospital. Although her condition is not. serious she is suffering from shock.
