SLEEPING couple ' POISONED BY GAS
found unconscious in r BED WIFE IN SERIOUS CONDITION Accidentally poisoned by gas while asleep in bed, Mr. and Mrs. Lynds, an elderly couple, aged 79 and 75 respectively. were discovered in a state of coma' early yesterday morning. Mr. Lynds responded quickly to restorative measures, out his wife is still unconscious and in a very low condition. Mr. and Mrs. Lynds reside with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Watson, of 17 Hastings Parade, llevonport, and occupy the lower portion of a two-storied house. Their rooms comprise a living-room with a gas cooker, and a bedroom adjoining.. During the early morning hours Mr. Watson thought he heard his name called out, but, not hearing it repeated, did not bother to investigate. Before going to work, however, he opened the door of the kitchen on the lower floor and found it reeking with gas. In the bedroom he found the couple unconscious, Mr. Lynds half out of bed US though he had attempted to get out to stop the gas. Mrs. Lynds was in bed. was in bed. Mr. Watson managed to drag his father-in-law to the open air, but could not carry Mrs. Lynds further than half-way across the kitchenette, where he had to leave her. ’ Dr. Trevor De Clive Lowe was summoned and applied restorative measures. Mr. Lynds made a quick recovery but his wife is still unconscious and in a low state. The cause of the gas escape was discovered to be through a tap on the gas-cooker in the adjoining kitchen being turned half on. Dr. De Clive Lowe said there was no doubt the occurrence was accidental.
