A trio has been formed in New York by Toacha Seidel, violinist; Evsel Beloussoff. 'cemst, and Emanuel Bay, Pianist.
Elephants and camels were borrowed from the nearby Bronx Zoo for a performance of “Aids" in the summer season of Starlight Park. an unusement centre in the upper part of New York city.
Carl Czerny, pupil of Beethoven and teacher of great virtuosi of the pianotorte, notably Liszt and Lescheti—zky, instructed his pupils thus:-—-“The fingers are to be so bent that the tips of them. together with that of the thumb. when extended outwards, may torn: one lralght line, and so that the keys may always be struck with the fleshy tips of the fingers. “Percussion on the. keys is effected solely by the lingers, which, without any actual blow, must press each key down firmly. Neither the hand nor the arm should be allowed to make any unnecessary movements.
Alfred Hill's Maori music scored a splendid success at the Hollwood Bowl, America. recently. Madame Eileen O’Moore (Bessie Doyle), the eminent Sydney violinist, who was a fellow student at Leipzig with Mr. Hill, stated that she heard Mr. Hill’s music played by M. Henri Verbrugghen's fine orchestra with great suc~ case. It was the only item that the audience encored. The announcer, in allowing the “no encore" rule to be broken on this occasion, said: “Alfred Hill should write more. His work has given great pic asure to this vast audi~ ence." Madame O’Moore says that she was delighted no less at the em thusiasm than the beauty of the work. Tito Schipa. lyric tenor of the Chicago Opera Company, will return to San Francisco next season for a concert appearance at the Dreamland Auditorium, in the Oppenheimer Subscription Series. He has been singing this summer at Ravinia. and will go in the autumn for a South American opera engagement before starting on the trans-continental tour that will bring him to San Francisco. The oppenheimer series will be opened in October by the Russian Symphonic Choir. Other attractions listed are Rosa Ponselle, soprano: Mischa Elman, violinist; Elsa Alsen, Wagnerian soprano; Louis Graveure. tenor; Doris Niles Ballet, Guy Maier and Lee Pattison, duo-pianists: the Flonzaley Quartet. and Benno Moiseiwitsch with Efrem Zimbalist in joint recital.
After a. three months’ tour or Europe, Alfred Hertz has returned to America to conduct the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra for his tourteenth consecutive season. The guest conductors with this orchestra during the coming season will be Ottorino Respighi, the noted Italian composer, and Rudolph Ganz, pianist-conductor.
Richard Strauss, famous author or the operatic gems "Rosenkavalier," “Salome,” and “Egyptian Helena,” and others, is completing a new oper called “Arabella." The scenes are laid in Vienna. Arabella. is the name of a very pretty Viennese countess who elopes with her coachman. The dialogue is merry, and the music is said to equal in charm any 0! Strauss’s previous ygrgg.
