SCHOOL SPORTS

BIG COMBINED MEETING SOME PROMISING ATHLETES Organised on the same lines as the Sydney G.P.S. sports, the first combined athletic meeting of the Auckland secondary schools, staged on the Domain yesterday afternoon, proved a distinct success. For the good of the sport of athletics in general, it is to be hoped that this meeting will now become an annual affair. The tracks were suited to good times, and the fine weather attracted 3 large attendance, which was treated to an exciting afternoon’s sport. The feature of the meeting was the Jtrve performances put up by the King’s College boys, who clinched the senior championship without a great deal of trouble. Especially in the hurdles events, the King’s boys, both seniors and juniors, came well to the fore; the competitors in red hurdling very stylishly and for school lads gave a fine exhibition of the three strides between the hurdles. The outstanding athlete of the day proved to be J. Meikle, of King s College, who managed the 120 yards hurdles in the fast time of 16sec., and also the 100 yards and 220 yards senior championship. He also gained a second place in the high jump. R. G. Burton, of the Mount Albert Grammar School also shows much promise. He is only a junior boy. but won both the senior and junor long jump championships, besides winning the 220 yards junior event, and gaining second place in the 100 yards and junior high jump. Throughout, the meeting was exceptionally well organised, and the carrying out of a strenuous afternoon’s work without a hitch, reflects great credit on the officials. Second in the senior .championship to King's College, which gained 50 points, was the Mount Albert Grammar School, with 29 points. Auckland Grammar School was third, with 8 points. Then followed Sacred Heart, 2 points, and Seddon Memorial Technical College, 1 point. Neither St. Stephen’s School nor Takapuna Grammar School scored a point. Mount Albert Grammar School easily carried off the honours in the junior championship with 35 points.
