RAIN STOPS WORK

GALLOPS AT ELLERSLIE SMART SPRINTING Dismal weather prevailed for training operations at Ellerslie this morning, rain setting in before the commencement, and as the result of a steady downpour after the breakfast interval, work was discontinued. SevI ex-al gallops took place on number one grass in the early morning, however, the most notable efforts going down to Golden Wedding, Segment, Monetize and Bulolo. The course proper was available for two-year-olds only from the half-mile post, but Pure Tea was the only one to sprint, moving over two furlongs in 27 1-5. Gold Money was the first to step out, moving over "- J x furlongs comfortably in 1.28 3 Recent racing appears to have improved her. From the six-furlong post, King Emerald was timed to run his first furlong in 13 3-5, two in 26 4-5, three in 39 2-5, and the complete journey in 1.20 4-5. It was a fair gallop, showing that he is very fit at the present time. War Officer and Thursby were not required to go against the clock in a six-furlong essay. Lomint was not bustled to cover six furlongs in 1.25 2-5, the first three taking 42, while Eager Rose, who strode over a similar distance, registered 1.26. Red Lion was asked .to go half a mile in 52, the initial furlong taking 13, He did it easily, and may be worthy of consideration in the Trial Stakes at Te Rapa on Saturday. A Good Try-Out The Waikato Cup candidate, Oorinax, was accompanied by Sleepy Sol in a bout over seven furlongs, the pair striding on terms for the first furlong in 14, two in 26 3-5, three in 39 4-5, the first half-mile in 52 4-5, and the seven in 1.32 4-5, Corinax having an advantage of two lengths at the end. The gallop emphasises that Corinax is in fine fettle to meet his near engagements, but Sleepy * Sol must be given credit for a good working effort too, for he had the worst of the weights, and was on the outside. Segment, with a good weight in the saddle, reeled off six furlongs in 1.19 4-5, getting over the first two in 26 and the first three in 39 2-5. • He was shaken up to record that time, and was travelling well at the finish. Bombarder was sent five furlongs, the last half-mile taking 52 2-5, While The Lover was not timed when moving over the same grounds Hyde Park did three-quarter pace work, Semi-Circle taking 39 for the last three of four furlongs. Vallar travelled over half a mile in 52, and appeared as if he could have done better. Baby Bun and Lucklaine were restricted to an easy five furlongs, taking 1.11 1-5. A Good Half Monetize, with nearly 9st. up, indicated that he is a galloper much above the ordinary by striding over' half a mile in 51 1-5 under a good check throughout. He moved very smartly over the initial furlong in 12 1-.5, and had he been shaken up would have done much better. That Golden Wedding % has suffered no ill-effects from her recent racing was demonstrated in approved fashion when she hit out freely in a six-fur-long task in 1.18 1-5. She was brought home by Optimistic and Salamander over the last half-mile. Optimistic, who finished a length in front of GolTen Wedding, " registered 52 1-5. Golden Wedding could not have improved upon her time, for she moved very fast from the start, taking 36 4-5 for the first , three, and 1..4 1-5 for. the last five. Miss Alma, Importer and Double Mint, finished with very little between them at the conclusion of a round in 1.52, while Modest Boy was not bustled to get over seven furlohgs in 1.39. By recording 50 1-5 for half a mile, Bulolo showed himself to be a particularly smart three-year-old, and although he could not have done much, if any, better, it was an impressive piece of work, for he carried only a few pounds off 9st. The first furlong of the gallop was covered in 12.

TRENTHAM NOTES COMMENT FROM THE COURSE FAVOURABLE PROSPECTS (Special to THE SUN) WELLINGTON*, Thursday. A little rain fell at Trentham this morning, but though it made overhead conditions somewhat unpleasant it did the track no harm, and, in fact, will improve it. The feature of the morning’s work was the barrier performance of Commendation. Pie was stood at the tapes in company with Shot Silk and. an inexperienced two-year-old. Commendation gave very little trouble and went away perfectly when the release was made. His behaviour has brought him into still further favour for his engagements at the Wellington meeting. Goshawk again did steady t work, and the impression that J. Barry will ride him is gaining him additional friends for the big handicap on Saturday. First Money is to be ridden in the Wellesley Stakes by A. E. Ellis. One of the new arrivals whose condition is very pleasing is Moa Bird. She might go a good race in the' Shorts Handicap. Black Mint, who is to be ridden in the Wellington Handicap by T. Metcalfe, was given two solid rounds. He is still inclined to be sore, but when warmed up this morning went very attractively. Pink Note’s Trial Pink Note is to run a trial tomorrow morning. He worked on the tan this morning, and there is no question about his being a very fit horse. Lady Gay, who is to contest the hurdle race on Saturday* gave a nice exhibition of schooling over the hurdles, showing to much greater advantage than Askari, who accompanied her. ~~ Chelone ran a good six furlongs. He got to the end of it in 1.17, and ran the last three in 38. He is full of ginger and is due to win another sprint race soon. Callanmore was responsible for a fast half-mile. He broke 49 for the four furlongs, and did it in. great style. He has abundant speed, but still seems to be troubled in the wind. The two-year-pld Sapient has gone sore. At present the weather is good, and though the spring is not a reliable season it looks like holding till Saturday. The course is fast, and unless rain falls will be hard despite a nice sole of grass.

Sister To Toxeuma The yearling half-sister by Aarusio to Toxeuma has been christened, and when she appears upon the racing track will contest in the name of Kipitera, a word that in the Maori language signifies Fairy Thought,
