Hynanna Has Not Yet Struck Form
BEATEN IN MODERATE FIELD SECOND DAY AT CAULFIELD (United, P.A. — By Telegraph — Copyright) MELBOURNE, Wednesday. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s spring meeting was advanced a further stage at Caulfield to-day in fine weather, when there was again a large attendance. Berripa, who was prominent in the last seven furlongs, won the Emo Hurdle Race nicely. He was trained and ridden by former New-Zealanders, Stan Reid and W. O’Halloran respectively. St. Andrew led over the last four furlongs in the Mona Nursery Handicap, and won comfortably. He w*ls ridden by J. Munro, and is trained by V. O’Neill. He cost 300 guineas as a yearling. Strephon held the lead throughout in the Herbert Power Stakes, and won brilliantly. This marked Srephon’s third win in five starts. He is trained by the former New Zealander, Lou Robertson. Strephon, who cost 525 guineas as a yearling, is engaged in the Melbourne Cup with 7.1. Hynanna appeared to have every chance, but only finished fourth. How It Was Run The fractional- times in the Herbert Power Stakes were:—First three furlongs, 401 sec; next four, : 493 sec; last four, 50sec; concluding six, 1.152. The Aga Khan led throughout in the Moonga Handicap and beat the fast finishing Merab. The winner has recorded two wins and a second in his last three starts. He was trained by his owner, W. Jacobsen. In the Coongy Handicap, Textile was at the back in the early stages but finished fast and gained a brilliant win. Textile, who was second in the corresponding race last year, was ridden by W. Scanlon and is engaged in the Caulfield Cup. Pinnacle was fifth early in the race but finished fast and won the first division of the Moora Welter Handicap easily. He was ridden by W. Duncan. Martimah, after being prominent throughout, beat the ex-New Zealander Waicullus comfortably in the second division. The winner, who was ridden by Dempsey, is owned by Ben Chaffey, a member of the V.A.T.C. committee.. D. Zealley was suspended for one month at Caulfield to-day. Mount of Olives arrived to-day. This filly won the South Australian Derby a fortnight ago. Prince Humphrey is looking well .and did pace work. at. Won by half a length, three lengths beween second and third. Byron was fourth. Time, 1.275. Coongy Handicap, of £750; 1 mile and .3 furlongs.—Textile, 9.2, 1; Serbury, 7.0, 2; Alfred the 'Great, 7.9, 3. Twenty started. Won by two lengths, one length between second and third. The Banker was fourth. Time, 2.20. Fractional times; First three furlongs, 392; next four, 492; last four, 51. Moora Welter Handicap, of £600; 1 mile.—First division: Pinnacle, 8.2, 1; Seventh Heaven, 7.12, 2; The Tyrant, 9.5, 3. Fourteen started. Won by three lengths, three-qaurters of a length between second and third. Headmore was fourth. Time, 1.413. Second division: Martimah, 8.6, 1; Waicullus, 9.8, 2; Tree Fox, 7.2, 3. Fifteen started. Won by two lengths, one and a-half lengths between second and third. Oriental Gem was fourth. Time* 1.413.
