BOY THIEF IN COURT
BORSTAL TERM GIVEN WELFARE DEPARTMENT CRITICISED Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, To-day. A 16-year-old boy came before Air. E. Mosley, S.M., this morning in the Children’s Court on six charges, involving the theft of goods and money to the value of £l6 ss. The magistrate committed the boy to a Borstal Institute for three years. The chief detective said that the first case had been reported in August and the boy had been previously committed for theft. “I understand that he was placed in your charge before,” said the magistrate to the Child Welfare Officer, “that he was sent to Wereroa, and that he was soon discharged from there. That is no good. If I thought the education authorities would do so again I would not give them the opportunity, but would send him straight to the Borstal Institution. So many crimes are being committed by youths past the juvenile stage that I am going to stop them by being more severe.”
