“WITH THE GOV’MINT”

MAORI AS OWN LAWYER “ONLY ELEVEN CHILDREN” (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Tuesday. Apiti told the Hamilton Magistrate’s Court to-day that he only had a smattering of English, but he defended himself so well that Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., dismissed a judgment summons issued against him by a grocery firm. Apiti informed the judgment creditor’s counsel that he -was earning £4 a week “with the “Gov’mint.” Counsel: What department? Defendant: Oh, te trucks. Counsel: Any children? Defendant: Only eleven. (Laughter.) As Apiti had to support a wife and seven of his children on his salary, the magistrate declined to make an order.
