GRANT FOR SCHOOL HOSTEL
CABINET TO RECONSIDER DECISION (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Tuesday. The spirited agitation for a free grant for a hostel for the Hamilton High School, which has been engaging the attention of all sections of the community recently, has not been ineffective. The chairman of the Board of Governors has, through the Hon. J. A. Young, M.P. for the district, received advice from the Minister of Education that Cabinet had decided to review its previous decision and the question of a free grant for a boys’ hostel (minus the 5 per cent, interest previously demanded) would be reconsidered. Owing to the amount of the sum, however, the Minister says the board cannot expect it right away. As the board did not make any special application for a grant in connection with the girls’ hostel, no grant could be expected for this. The news was received with considerable satisfaction locally, although the indefinite statement regarding the time when the money will be available to commence building has caused some concern.
