LOAN FOR NEWMARKET
POLLING TO-MORROW SAFETY ZONES AND DRAINAGE To-morrow ratepayers in Newmarket will be called upon to vote upon a proposal to raise £13,500 for expenditure on borough improvements. The sum of £11,500 of the loan has been earmarked for drainage work and reticulation, and of the balance it is proposed to spend £1,200 on altering the tram-tracks for the new safetyzone in the Triangle and £BOO on the reconstruction of Mortimer’s Pass. Interest is being taken in the poll mainly because of the division of opinion in the Borough Council on the subject of moving the safety-zone. If the proposals are carried out the intention is to move the tram-track where it turns into Broadway from Khyber Pass further into the Triangle and to build a safety-zone there. At the same time the present stop at the corner of Broadway and Station Street will be moved up the street until it is opposite the Newmarket Hotel, and a new stop will be provided on the Remuera line just before the Remuera Road turns into Broadway.
Newmarket’s share of the cost is £1,200, and the balance of £1,300 necessary to complete the work will be provided by the City Council. The drainage work, for which the greater part of the loan is wanted, comprises the construction of a branch sewer from Boston Road to join the main sewer before it reaches Hobson Bay. The City Council and the Mount Eden Borough Council will share in the cost of this work. Booths for voting will be situated at the Municipal Chambers in Broadway and at the Rev. Jasper Calder’s garage in Park Road. They will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
