CRISIS IN RUMANIA

GOVERNMENT EXPELS HUNGARIANS “PEOPLE’S PATIENCE ENDED” (United, Service) Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Monday. The Budapest correspondent of the “Daily Mail” says the Rumanian authorities have issued a decree authorising the expulsion of 650,000 Hungarian workers from Transylvania, including almost all the employees of the sugar and leather factories, owing to adverse economic conditions. Destitution is so widespread in Transylvania that only the Influence of’the leaders of the National Peasant Party has averted serious disturbances; but M. Juliu Maniu, the peasants’ leader, last week declared that the people’s patience was ended, and the country ready for an overthrow of the Government. A Budapest message says a monster meeting is being organised to protest against the Rumanian Labour Ministry’s decree, expelling from Transylvania 650,000 Hungarian wageearners, half of whom have become naturalised.

Exceptions will be made in the case of those who arrived before 1914, or if they marry Rumanian wives before the end of October.

When the Peasants’ Tarty recently met at Alba Julia, there was talk of thousands marching to the capital and demanding the resignation of the Government. This was not done, though the peasants seemed ready to take any such action. , The elections held in June, 1927, resulted in the return of the following parties:—Lower House: Ministerialists. 328; l’easants* Party. 46; Minorities. IS. Senate: Liberals, 06; Peasants’ Party. l > Minorities. 2. M. Vintila Bratianu is Prime Miinster and Minister of Finance.
