WANTED CYCLE RIDE

SEAMEN’S ESCAPADE FRIEND SHARES 'BLAME Ernest H uzzey, a fireman from the Rimutaka, could not resist the temptation to go for a cycle ride yesterday. He enlisted the aid of George Murray Rayner, another fireman, and they took the machine from the back of the Post Office. At the Police Court this morning they pleaded guilty to stealing a bicycle, which was valued at £‘4, from Ray St. John Dormer. According to the evidence of several telegraph messengers, who had brought up a discreet rear to the procession, Huzzey had wheeled the bicycle down to the Queen’s Wharf in the direction of the Rimutaka. Rayner was walking beside him. One of the boys told the police and the men were arrested. Accused, who were clad in decidedly sketchy garments, w r ith sweat rags round their necks, appeared rather bewildered, and declined to make any statement, although Huzzey explained that he only took the bicycle to go for a ride. “The thing is that the Rimutaka. is sailing to-morrow and that is probably the last we should have seen of the men or the bicycle,” said Sub-Inspector McCarthy. Huzzey was fined £ 2 and Rayner £l. The bicycle had been slightly damaged and the two men were ordered to share the cost of repairing it—--23s 6d.
