Diomede's Captain

PRESIDENT OF DAUNTLESS COURTS-MARTIAL

According to information received in Auckland , Captain L. V. Wells, D. 5.0., R.N., captain of H.M.S. Diomede, was president of the courts-martial at Portsmouth arising out of the stranding of H.M.S. Dauntless in Halifax Harbour, Nova Scotia, in a dense fog, on July 2. As a result of the stranding of the cruiser navigating-officer Lieut.-Commander T. R. Beatty was charged with negligently, or by default, suffering the cruiser to be stranded, and sentenced to be dismissed his ship and to be severely reprimanded. Captain D. McPherson, in command of the Dauntless, was also ordered to be dismissed his ship and reprimanded. The Diomede, which has been refitting in England, is expected back in Auckland on November 19.
