AT THE SIGN OF THE PENNAT

BID FOR SAYONARA CUP NEW YACHT BUILDING In th© boat-building yard of James Hayes and Son, Careening Cove, Sydney Harbour, work is proceeding apace on the construction of a stately eightmetre yacht, which the owner. Mr. Percy Arnott, a well-known yachting enthusiast, hopes will be the next defender of the Sayonara Cup. The cup is awarded to the winner of Australia’s greatest yacht race, which is decided in five heats. Mr. Arnfitt’s yacht will be named Vanessa, which the owner explains is a species of butterfly. The name was given to him by the curator of the Hobart Museum. Measuring 47ft 9in overall. the Vanessa has a beam of eight feet ten inches, and will carry 825 square feet of canvas. She will be Marconi rigged. The holder of the Sayonara Cup is the Norn, and it will be necessary for the Vanessa and that yacht to engage in a series of tests in November or December to decide which shall represent New South Wales. “All yachtsmen in New South Wales.” said Mr. Arnott, recently, “are looking forward to the match with Mr. Lance Randerson’s Victorian yacht, the Eun-na-Mara (Gallic for Pride of the Sea). “The fine sporting qualities of Mr. Randerson have made him highly popular here, and should my yacht be selected to represent our State it> will give me the greatest pleasure to engage in friendly rivalry with such a splendid owner and his captain and crew.” The first race for the Sayonara Cup will take place on January 17. CORNWELL CONTEST VENUE The Cornwell Cup contest committee of the Takapuna Boating Club has initiated preliminaries for the holding of the 1929 contest. Mr. C. Hoverd. secretary to the contest last January, has agreed to act in that capacity pro tem. The committee has written to all the ports which competed in the last contest asking whether any is desirous of holding the forthcoming contest at its home port. The committee would like to see the races in Otago in 1929. In event of more than one port wishing to conduct the contest the Takapuna committee will decide the venue in accordance | with its powers.
