PROMINENT PERFORMERS POINTS FOR PUNTERS Although slow to move away, Ktta Cole soon settled down in the Waitemala Trot and, splendidly handled by Fred. Gilchrist, won cleverly by a narrow margin. It was a popular win and the tilly will win more races for owner Docherty. Gold Sovereign ran one of his best races in the opening trot, and after putting in a bad break live furlongs from home, came with a great dash to get within a head of the favourite. AMONG THE IMPROVERS Suntish began badly in the Improvers’ Handicap, and was well back from the leaders with half the journey gone. He put in a good dash, and was prominent two furlongs from home, but died away at the end. Free Advice showed her true value by winning the mile and a-half pacers’ heat from 24 yards behind in approved style. J. Bryce’s lino judgment was responsible in a great measure for the manner in which the filly scored. Laplander was always threatening danger in the Improvers’ Handicap, and when it came to the final pinch he put in a desperate challenge and was only a head behind Free Advice when the post was reached. KOHARA BACK TO FORM Alex. Corigan’s judgment left nothing to bo desired in the Spring Handicap and he landed the 1927 New Zealand Cup winner home by a short head. The slow pace over the first part of the journey suited Koliara, and it was made to order for him over the last, bit. Locli Moigh, after making the pace all the way in the big event, was just topped off at the death-knock by Kohara. The race will do Bill Hughes’s charge a lot of good. Western King went a sound race in the Spring Handicap, as did his stable mate, Jewel Pointer. The former pulled hard over the early stages, but when his driver let him go he showed a great burst of speed, but faded out over the final issue. Jackie Audubon lost his position after the jump out in the Spring Handicap, but he was never far away at any stage of the race, and wound up with a good effort into third place. He made up for this failure by winning the mile like a tradesman. GOOD THREE-YEAR-OLD Wrackler looked like being well out of the Derby three furlongs from home, but M. Holmes brought the youngster along in the straight with a terrific dash to win by a narrow margin. It was a high-class performance, but he was fortunate in finding a good opening at the bend. The Auckland-owned and trained Rolfe Audubon put up a splendid performance in the Derby and finished with dash and gameneess into second place, which augurs well for his racing future. Pageant came at the finish of tbe Stewards’ Handicap with a great rattle to snatch victory on the post by half a head. He was in an awkward position two furlongs from home, but finished like a racehorse. TAIPARE’S GOOD FORM * Taipare went a good race in the slow class two miles, and but for tangling at the bottom of the straight would have probably been returned the winner. The grey evened up nicely in the final heat of the day. Dillon Huon lost ground at the start of the mile and never afterwards looked like being a winner, although he showed a lot of pace in the middle section. A SOLID TROTTER Tiger Salve, patiently driven by C. G. Lee, was first out and first home in the Mountain Trot, but his task was made easier by Great Change breaking at a critical period of the journey Young Blake was always going like a possibility in the two-mile trot, but a couple of breaks on the journey spoiled a good chance. When he appeared to be in the running lor ho left his feet near tlae post. \ Great Change left the mark in good style, and soon had his supporters on excellent terms with themselves. Three furlongs from home, he left his feet, but came again well in the straight to get second money. Nelson Tasker showed a good deal of dash in the 10-furlong flutter, cmd after a big fight in the run home was only beaten by a small margin.
