Thrilling Trotting
KEEN SPORT AT EPSOM Kohara Springs Big Surprise SPECTACULAR DERBY CONTEST SOME of the keenest contests ever held at Alexandra Park were witnessed yesterday when the Auckland Trotting Club held the first day of the spring carnival, following on a postponement for climatic reasons on Saturday.
Notwithstanding the fact that yesterday was an off day with the racing public, there was a splendid attendance at Alexandra Park to witness the staging of the card, postponed from Saturday on account of the unfavourable climatic conditions. The weather was excellent, and the track, while somewhat holding, was in very fair order. The racing was of a high-class order, the finishes in every instance being close and. exciting, head victories being a strong feature of the contests and a compliment to the work of handicapper George Paul. The meeting was splendidly conducted and the various officials carried out their duties in a top-hole fashion. Nothing occurred to mar the enjoyment of the sport and stipendiary steward Reid found his duties pleasant. It was only to be expected that after the alteration of the day the totalisator returns would show a decrease on the opening day last spring but investments reached a very satisfactory mark, the sum of £35,847 being handled by the capable totalisator staff against £43,050 on the corresponding day last October. The Derby proved a keen and spectacular race and the win of Mr. H. F. Nicolls’s fine youngster Wrackler was well received. To win from his insecure position two furlongs from home- the Wrack gelding proved himself a good one. Kohara sprung a surprise in the big event, but the race was run to suit him, and this, added to the excellent judgment of his driver, Alex. Corrigan, gave him a well-deservedi victory. Etta Cole At Last A dozen started in the Waitemata Trot, and a big favourite in Etta Cole duly landed. The local mare carried £904, others to come in for support being Bright Light (£565), Lonesome (£470), and Kolmar (£404). All got away well, the favourite being a bit slow, Lonesome leading out of the straight from Colonel Thorpe, Etta Cole, Smoko Peter, Golden Gate, Kolmar, and Roma Bingen. There was little change in the first circuit, but in the straight agaip the back-markers moved up, Lonesome still being in charge from Etta Cole, Kolmar, Bright Light, and Gold Sovereign, these being in close order, with Roma Bingen,
Sebisca, and Anseline following. .Along the back the favourite joined Lonesome, while Kolmar, Gold Sovereign, and Bright Light were handy, Roma Bingen heading the others. Etta Cole was clear into the straight from Gold Sovereign and Lonesome, with Bright Light right up, Kolmar and Anseline being at intervals. Etta Cole did it right in the run to the judge, stalling off Gold Sovereign’s late run to win by a short head, with Sebisca two lengths back third. A length away were Anseline, Lonesome, and Bright Light in a line, and Kolmar, Roma Bingen, and Gold Star were the next to finish. Consistent Free Advice All came out for the Improvers’ Handicap, and in an interesting betting race the rango favoured Sunfish (£937), Free Advice (£674), Cornelian (£529), and Laplander (£433). Sunfish was slow to go off, Firpo, Goldman and Rpckburn also failing to strike a gait. Cornelian showed the way out of the straight from Cora Tacks, Abrudbanya, Dqytime, and Laplander, and passing the stands the .second time Cora Tacks was making play from Cornelian. Sunfirh, Laplander, Abrudbanya, Van Rich, Free Advice, Nelson Dillon, and Ribbonwood’s Last. The field bunched again down the back, and with a great burst Free Advice hit the front at the three furlongs, being attended by Cora Tacks, Sunfish, Abrudbanya, Laplander, Van Rich, Daytime, and Cornelian. Free Advice led into the straight a length in front of Laplander, with Daytime, Sunfish, ( Cora Tacks, Abrudbanya, and Van Rich following. A good finish between Free Advice and Laplander was witnessed, the farmer gaining a head decision. Two and a-half lengths away was Daytime, and the next to finish were Cora Tacks, Sunfish, Van Rich, Abrudbanya, Ribbonwood’s Last, and Firpo. The Big Event A fine race was that provided by the contestants in the principal event, the Spring Handicap. The bracket Western King and Jewel Pointer carried £1,372, while there was good money for Dalmeny £1,169, Gold Jacket £657, Loch Moigh £ 641 and Jackie Audubon £6lB. Talent and Western King were a bit slow off, and before he had settled
down Jewel Pointer broke, settling down again smartly. Loch Moigh led down the back from Jackie Audubon, Dalmeny, Talent and Western King, and passing the stands the first time Loch Moigh and Dalmeny were almost on terms in front of Jackie Audubon, Western King, Talent, Gold Jacket, Kohara, Machine Gun and Jewel Pointer, the last named having made up considerably on his handicap. There
was little change in the next circuit, Loch Moigh, Dalmeny, Western King, Jackie Audubon, Kohara, Talent, Gold Jacket, Machine Gun and Jewel Pointer being the order, seven or eight lengths covering the field. Three furlongs from hopie Loch Moigh and Western King were in the van from Jackie Audubon, with Kohara, Machine Gun, Dalmeny and Gold Jacket close up. There was little between Loch Moigh, Western King and Kohara into the straight, with Jackie Audubon close up on the rails, and Gold Jacket next. In the run home Kohara and Loch Moigh had a set-to, the former winning by a head. Jackie Audubon was a length and a-half back, and half a length away was Jewel Pointer, with Gold Jacket, Western King and Machine Gun right up, and a long gap back to Dalmeny. Fine Classics Struggle Four defections left a field of nine to contest the Great Northern Derby, and from the outset of betting operations the bracket Wrackeen and Wrackler was a popular fancy, finally winding up carrying £ 1,237, the second choice, Hinkler, being entrusted with £629. Alice Axworthy galloped off the mark. Trustworthy showed the way out of the straight to Bloss Audubon, Wrackler and Hinkler. Along the back Security was rushed to the van and with Wrackler led past the stands the second time, attended by Alice Axworthy and Sonoma Child, these being in close order, with Trustworthy, Rolfe Audubon, Hinkler, Bloss Audubon and Wrackeen following. Along the back Security, Alice Axworthy and Wrackler were in the van, Sonoma Child, Rolfe Audubon, Trustworthy and Hinkler following. Sonoma Child was first into the straight from Security, Rolfe Audubon, Hinkler and Wrackler, the last-named finishing strongly to account for the outsider, Rolfe Audubon, by a neck, with Trustworthy a couple of lengths away a head in front of Hinkler. Then came Security, Alice Axworthy, Sonoma Child and Wrackeen. False Run Race A muddling pace was set for the first mile in the Stewards’ Handicap, a great betting race being recorded, Pageant £1,170, Fight Ever £.882, Harvest Child £869 and Taipare £687 being best backed. Hughie Wallace and Rose Bingen were pulled up after the first round. Harvest Child made the pace easy for Taipare, Pageant and Fight Ever, the quartet being at lengthy intervals passing the stands. Thus they raced for the next circuit, but down the back the last time Taipare was clear of Fight Ever, with Harvest Child and Pageant at intervals. Flight Ever had a slight call over Taipare into the straight, with Pageant close up. The last named was in a bad position on the rails at the bottom of the straight, but he got clear. It was a thrilling finish, Pageant winning by half a head from Taipare, with Fight Ever a head away, and Harvest Child, a length and a-half away fourth. Smart Winning Effort A nice field of seven contested the October Handicap, the favourite being Jackie Audubon £1,260, with Western King £847, Dillon Huon £714 and Talent £647 also in mild demand. All Bell was first into his stride and passing the post the first time was a good four lengths in front of Talent and Dillon Huon, with Jackie Audubon and The Shrew (slow off) following. Down the back All Bell was still in command, from Lady Dunmore, Talent, Dillon Huon, Jackie Audubon and The Shrew. Into the straight Lady Dunmore and All Bell were on terms, with Talent and Dillon Huon close up and Jackie Audubon next off the course. The last named finished very strongly to snatch a half length victory from Lady Dunmore and All Bell, who dead-heated. Half a length away was Talent, and then came The Shrew and Dillon Huon. Western King was very slow off the mark and ran in the rear throughout. Tiger Salve Goes Solid Sister Beatrice was withdrawn from the Mountain Trot, and there was
never any doubt as to Maxegin being the public fancy, for he carried £1,211 against Young Blake £B6O and Tiger Salvo £709. Over the early part Tiger Salve, Great Change and Tradesman set a merry pace, while Maxegin failed to settle down, and was continually tip and down, and The Tartar broke badly. In the second circuit Tiger Salve Great Change and Tradesman were at length and a-half intervals, while Young Blake was half a dozen lengths away, and Betty Moko and Maxegin followed. Along the back Tradesman and then Great Change got up, leaving Tiger Salve to turn for home six lengths in front of Great Change and Young Blake, and he went on to win by two and a-half lengths. Young Blake broke on the post and Great Change got second money by three parts of a length. Tradesman was a poor fourth, and Betty Moko and Maxegin were at intervals. The winner was driven a patient race by the Epsom trainer, G. G. Lee, and the win w*as well received. Taipare Makes Amends The Luvan-Nelson McCormack bracket was a warm favourite for the concluding event, the Electric Handicap. carrying £999, while there was a late rush on Taipare £722, with Native Prince £657 and William the Great £ 543 next best supported. At the start Hughie Wallace, Firpo, Nelson McCormack, Nihilist Junior and Sister Beatrice all made early mistakes and were soon out of the running. Goldman was the leader when they settled down, being attended by Mulwaree, Dundas Boy, Luvan, Woodvale and William the Great. Passing the stands Goodman and Mulwaree were still at the head of affairs, being followed by Dundas Boy, Luvan, Woodvale, William the Great, Nelson McCormack, Taipare, Nelson Tasker and Native Prince, the field being in fairly
close order at this stage. Down the back Goldman, Dundas Boy, Mulwaree, Nelson Tasker, Luvan. Taipare and William the Great comprised the leading division, but Taipare, and Nelson Tasker went round the field crossing the top and were first into the straight, with Luvan, Dundas Boy. Native Prince, Nihilist Junior at intervals. Taipare went on to score nicely by three parts of a length from Nelson Tasker, with Luvan a head away third. Native Prince was a couple of lengths back in fourth place, and then came William the Great, Dundas Boy, Woodvale and Mulwaree.
