MOLLISON’S SHOWING BALMERINO WINS GUINEAS GOTHIC TAKES CAULFIELD STAKES ( United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) MELBOURNE, Sunday. The Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s Spring Meeting opened at Caulfield yesterday in fine weather. The State Governor, Lord Somers, was present, and there was a large attendance, Avhich included a number of New Zealanders. Gothic won the Caulfield Stakes, bringing his winning total in stakes to over £13.000. He was second early in the contest, and, finishing most strongly, he won brilliantly, gaining a popular success. Gothic was trained by the former New Zealander, Lou Itobertson. The rider, J. Pike, won tile event on The Hawk in 1927. Hunot King, who was prominent throughout, won the Ringwood Steeplechase easily. Tho favourite, Tryst, fell at the third fence. Howson, the rider of Hunot King, also scored at Flemington on the previous Saturday on Willanjie. TRAINED BY D. PRICE. Balmerino finished with a lightning run and won the Caulfield Guineas in the last stride, and in time equalling the race record. The winner was trained by the ex-New Zealander, Dave Price. Balmerino is engaged in the V.R.C. Derby, and he is in <he Melbourne Cup with 7.3. Spear King won the First Division of the 1010 Welter all the way. The rider, A. Wilson, scored his seventh success in four days. Headraore was prominent throughout and beat a fast-finishing pair in Tyrant and Pinnacle in the second division in time equalling the race record. W. Brady rode the winner. ILoadmore and Spear King are, both sons of Spearhead. Bel Rouge led early in the Debutante Stakes, but Parkwood, finishing Last, gained the verdict. The winner was trained by F. Musgrave, and was ridden by W. Duncan. Parkwood is a son of the Melbourne Cup winner, Backwood. He was bred by the Messrs. Baillieu. Kalloni, who was always in a good position in the Toorak Handicap, led into the straight and won easily. This was Kalloni’s fourth successive victory. The time constituted a course record.
