RAIN SPOILS OPENINGS Rain spoilt the openings of a number of tennis clubs on Saturday. A few, including Campbell Park, defied the weather. CAMPBELL PARK CLUB About 30 members gathered in the pavilion to hear the president’s address, and to see last year’s prizes presented. Air. V. Barfoot, the president, spoke of the striking progress of the club, which in six years has risen from one court and a tool-shed pavilion to ten courts and the second largest membership in Auckland. He welcomed the players and invited members and visitors to the Labour Day tournament. He said that the club had spent more than £270 on improvements during the year. The pavilion had been brightened with curtains, easy chairs and mats. This season the club intended to enter a B grade team in the inter-clubs for the first, time, as well as C and D grade teams. Last season the membership had grown to 178, the second largest in Auckland. There were a number of vacancies this year. The woman champion, Aliss S. Bull, served the first ball. She served a double fault, to the -amusement of the watchers. Air. Barfoot presented the miniature cups to the winners of the club championship, as follows: Men’s, G. Martin; women’s, Aliss S. Bull; men’s doubles, J. C. Andrews . and V. H. Barfoot; women’s doubles, Alisses P. Rukutai and A. Leng; mixed, Aliss P. Rukutai and J. Rukutai. SEDDON lAN CLUB The Seddonian Tennis Club, Alount Eden, held its opening on Saturday afternoon. In spite of adverse weather conditions there was a fair attendance. The Mayor of Alount Eden. Air. E. H. Potter, declared the new pavilion and tennis courts open. One of the lady members put the finishing touch to the ceremony by serving the first ball of the season. Afternoon tea was provided. PAPATOETOE CLUB On account of the inclement weather conditions prevailing on Saturday, the official opening of the Papatoetoe Tennis Club was cancelled. It has been decided to hold an informal opening next Saturday, when progressive tennis will be played. Friends of the club are invited to attend. MANUREWA CLUB The official opening of the Alanurewa Tennis Club, set down for Saturday, was postponed on account of the unfavourable weather. WAIUKU CLUB Stormy weather was responsible for an attendance of only about 20 when the president, Air. A. W. M. Ohlson, performed the opening ceremony of the Waiuku Tennis Club. The president welcomed visitors, including members of the Pukekohe, West End, Aka Aka and Kariotahi Clubs. The speaker referred to the club’s success in competitions last year and stated that prospects were very bright for a large increase in membership for the present year. The proposal to have one or two more courts put down was receiving attention from the committee. Air. L. F. Shakespear, a life member of the club, then drove the first ball over the net, and the declared the courts open. Later in the day the lady members of the club entertained all present at afternoon tea.
