MARINER’S CALCULATIONS A N Auckland master mariner who worked out the position estimated that at 1 p.m. the plane was approximately 819 miles from Sydney and at 2 p.m. 775 miles, so that ? only 44 miles was covered in the hour. Judging by the frequent alterations of the course he considers the plane is drifting a lot.
