INSPECTION A FARCE
HEALTH WORK IN MATAMATA COUNCIL BLAMES DEPARTMENT “So far as this country is concerned the inspection by the Health Department is a farce.” said Councillor W. H. Allen, at the monthly meeting of the Matamata County Council. The discussion was introduced by Councillor Darby during the reading of accounts, that for the Health Department being £7B. He said that in nine years an inspector had paid three visits to Arapuni, two of which were made at his request. He did not think it right that riding members should bring opprobrium on themselves by requesting the sanitary inspector to visit their districts. In his opinion regular visits should be paid. Councillor Judd supported him, holding that at least settlements such as Waharoa, Tirau and Arapuni should be visited regularly. The chairman said the council’s contribution toward the inspector worked out at 30s. ner week. Members agreed the inspector had too big an area to cover, there, being 300 square miles in Matamata County alone, while the district went as far south’ as Opotiki, but it was decided the time had arrived for regular visits of inspection especially for the places j named, and it was decided to inform, the department of this view.
