QUAIL FROM NORFOLK
ACCLIMATISATION WORK ESTIMATES FOR YEAR At yesterday’s meeting of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society, advice was received from the Department of Internal Affairs that permission to import 500 Virginian quail from Norfolk Island had been granted. Tho chairman, Mr. F. E. McKenzie, stated that the birds were # expected to arrive shortly. An application was received from the Taumarunui Rod and Gun Club seeking permission for spoon and bait fishing in the Ongarue River from Wairniha to the junction of the Wanganui River. It was decided to giant the application if amendment to the regulations could be gazetted during the present season, and if this could not be done to have the amendment made next i year. | The question of preparing an anglers* guide and collecting information on fishing was deferred until the end of the present season. . Estimates of revenue and expenditure for the year ending March, 1929, were submitted by the secretary, Mr. C. M. Gordon, the excess of revenue being shown at £IOO. The total estimated receipts were £ 3,177, the main items being shooting licences, £2,097; fishing. £759; deer, £3O: opossum, £SO; and godwit, £3l.- The main items of expenditure were:—Rangers' salaries, £621; cost of pheasants, £600: bounty on hawks’ feet, £260: secretary’s salary, £218; payments for trout fry, £315: cost of snipe and chukor. £130; and partridges, £B9.
