WORK OF CENTURIES
CATHEDRAL FOR AUCKLAND SITE DEFINITELY SECURED The possibility of the erection of a permanent Anglican Cathedral for Auckland was mentioned in the charge to Synod by Archbishop at the opening of the Diocesan Synod at the Cathedral this morning. “The passing of the Bill to confirm the creation of the General Church Trust has cleared away for ever any doubts as to the legal ownership of the Cathedral and Bishop's house sites, and has given a fifrther impetus, to the desire to build upon the commanding site in Parnell a Cathedral worthy of commemorating the work of the great and only Bishop of New Zealand, and worthy of the mother diocese of the Church in this province,” skid the Archbishop. “It may not be possible to think of building even part of a permanent Cathedral in Auckland for many years, but now that the site is definitely secured and the building fund definitely started, it is hoped that generous donations and legacies will be forthcoming, and that Auckland eventually will possess a Cathedral worthy of the city and of the diocese. “Many of the great cathedrals in England were c the work of centuries, and Auckland should aim at a modest beginning of the work and leave the reminder to future generations.”
