GREAT TYNE BRIDGE

KING AND QUEEN TO OPEN British Official "Wireless RUGBY, Tuesday. King George and Queen Mary will break their journey from Balmoral, where they have recently been in residence, and tomorrow will open the new Tyne Bridge. This spans the river at Newcastle. The two existing railway bridges across the Tyne at Newcastle were also opened by Royalty. One of them was built by the great engineer, Robert Stephenson, and was opened by the late Queen Victoria in 1549. The new bridge is intended for road traffic only. The structure Is a high-level bridge of a single span. It is 531 feet long and is the largest steel arch yet constructed in this country. The total cost of the bridge and its approaches exceeds £1,000,000.
