MOTOR-CARS AND BEANS

DAMAGED CARGO SOLD BARGAIN-HUNTERS SCORE Bidding was fairly brisk at the isle of salvage from the Port Napier, which caught fire and had to put into Samoa recently. “General cargo” included a motor-car, drapery, fancy goods, paper, butter beans, chocolates and assorted articles. The sale attracted 60 people to the King’s Wharf this morning. “Great Christmas presents” the auctioneer described the 30 dozen bottles of “famous jockey scent” which brought £8 10s. Two cases of toys, clockwork motor-cars complete with garages, were competed for briskly, one or two representatives of picnic committees being present. Invoice Trices suggested that the goods were worth £4O, but the bidders refused to go higher than £9 15s a case. St jumble of women’s patent leather shV*s of uniform design, slightly damaged, were said to be worth 35s a pair. The auctioneer could not get as pair, the 70 dozen going for £l4 10s to a representative of a local shoe firm. There wae no demand for electrical fittings, including 30 dozen wall plugs valued at £4O. The case sold for £7 10s. A fairly good bargain seemed to be a case of leather suit cases, collar boxes and other leather goods, slightly damaged, which, starting at £3 10s. went up to £l4. SWEETS FOR ELECTORS? “He must be goiug to give them to the electors,” said a bystander wheji a man who has been prominent in general elections in the past started to bid for 28 21b boxes of liqueur-filled, chocolates, which had not been damaged- He got them, too, for £4 2s *>d, which was a little more than half their original price. A case of suits and flannel trousers, worth £BO, fetched £SO. Then a case of working trousers, said to be valued at £9O, was opened. The case went for £4l 10s. Two china cabinets, slightly the worse for water and rough usage, but said to have been worth, originally, £4O, did not attract anyone until the auctioneer started them himself at £lO for the pair. Bids rose to £l9 19s. A case of feather boas, black c ats, and babv shoes was sold for less than £5.
