STIFFY AND MO POPULAR In a happy series of burlesques and i with their remarkably original patter. J Nat Phillips and Roy Rene, as Stiffy and Mo, cbntinue to delight crowded | audiences at St. James Theatre. Mo is a host in himself, with his bright jests and comed> sketches. Stiffy is winning many new admirers, j and a third member of the main comedy string, ’Erb (Jack Kelleway) is bringing gusts of laughter with his solemn face and his eccentric dancing, i Led by Frank Wilson, the Charlston Symphonie Six, a jazz band of exceptional vigour, is pleasing Aucklanders. • The band makes syncopation a feature, and novelty solo work is introduced freely. Sadie Gale’s characterisations in comedy sketches are excellent, and h*>r sinking adds to * l S success of the company. Amy Rochelle shows her versatility in child imitations and by singing to good effect in her more serious work. Other prominent entertainers are Peter Brooks, Daisy Merrett. Dan Weldon. Dan Dunbar and Sylvia Gardner, while there is ample chorus singing and ballet dancing. The company lias started off on its first week in Auckland by making a decided impression, and further success is certain. “CODE OF SCARLET” AT ROYAL The story of a boy who led his relatives to believe that he was a doctor, whereas he was really a motor racing driver, is the theme of “The Rejuvenation of Aunt Mary,” which is at present being shown at the Royal Theatre, Kingsland. May Robson is seen as the old auntie, and Haxrisofi Ford is Jack, her nephew. The trouble commences when Aunt Mary decides to visit Jack at his hospital. With the help of his friend, Mel, Jack manages to change his premises sufficiently to deceive his aunt. A story of the Royal North-west Mounted Police, “Code of the Scarlet,” with Ken Maynard in the leading role, will also be shown. Richard Barthelmess in “Out of the Ruins,” has one of those tense roles, with many moments of ecstatic lovemaking, Marian Nixon playing opposite him. John Francis Dillon is directing this stirring drama of France after the war.
