WORK SCARCE IN SYDNEY

S.A. OFFICER’S VIEWS FEEDING HUNGRY HUNDREDS Unemployment has been more prevalent in Sydney during the past winter than for several years, according to Brigadier J. Williams, J.P., who arrived in Auckland by the Marama this morning. Brigadier Williams, who intends spending a holiday in New Zealand, was stationed in Auckland 35 years ago. Later he was transferred to Australia, and he is now engaged in men’s social work in Sydney. “We have our crime waves and troubles in Sydney,” he admitted this morning, “but I do not think that Sydney is any worse in that respect than any other big city. “In the course of my work I come into contact with a legion of ‘down-and-outs/ for the Army feeds and shelters hundreds of men daily. Naturally the shipping trouble has made a difference to the number of the unemployed. “For some time past we have had patrols in the domains at night, and the officers on this duty issue bed and meal tickets to people found sleeping on seats and under the shelter of rocks. The past winter is the worst we have experienced for some time in this respect.
