CANCER RESEARCH

AUSTRALIAN EXPERT RETURNS EDUCATING THE PUBLIC It is possible in the near future that some forms of cancer may be treated with a serum. This is the opinion of Dr. L. M. McKillop, of Brisbane, who is returning by the Niagara after representing the Queensland Government and the Queensland Cancer Campaign Committee at a big International Cancer Congress in London. He stated yesterday that over 400 delegates from all parts of the world attended the congress but unfortunately New Zealand was not represented. Papers were read and cancer was discussed from every possible aspect.

“As far as the actual causation of cancer is concerned, the best known cause is chronic irritation,” said Dr. McKillop. “Considerable stress was laid on the rapidly increasing use of radium, so much so that some forms of cancer are better treated by radium than by the knife. Lead treatment was not generally approved by the Congress, and it is being condemned. “Renewed efforts are being made in practically every research institute in the world to discover the cause of cancer and to give the public the best treatment possible that the profession knows.

“One of the outcomes of the conference will be the determination to educate the public as to the danger of cancer, the meaning of pre-cancerous conditions.'and the means to avoid them.” Dr. McKillop stated that it was not advisable to make public too much about what was being done by the cancer experts in their research work.
