THE HOUSEWIFE’S GUIDE The poor demand for duck eggs continues in the City Markets, and merchants are having difficulty in disposing of plentiful supplies. Hen eggs are in good supply, with a fair demand. Prices are: Hen, 1s 2d to 1s 3d a dozen; intermediate, 1s 1d to 1s 2d; duck, 1s to 1s Id. There has been a general weakening of the butter market. For farmers’ butter there is a fair demand for moderate supplies. It brings 1s 2d to 1s 3d a lb. Firstgrade factory butter in the shops sells for cash up to 1s 3d a lb; second grade, 1s 6d and 1s 7d. In the shops, for cash, sirloin fetches 10d a lb; prime ribs. 7d a lb; corned round, 8d a lb; beefsteak, 7d a lb; rump steak, 1s 2d a lb; gravy beef, 6d a lb. On the market benches cabbages bring 2s to 6s a dozen; cauliflowers, 3d to 1s each; new potatoes, 1d to 4d a lb- green peas, 5d to 8d a lb; beans, 1s 3d to 2s a lb; lettuce. 2s to 4s 6d a case; cucumbers, 3s to 7s a dozen; vegetoble marrow,', 5s to 7s a dozen; spinach, 1s to 1s 9d a dozen bundles; rhubarb, 3s to 4s 6d a dozen bundles; pumpkins, 1s to 3s each; celery, 3d to 2s 6d a bundle: -adir£i, 6d to iOd a dozen bundles; asparagus, 1s to 1s 4d a bundle; leeks, 3d to 6d a bundle; spring onions, 3d to 1s a bundle; carrots, turnips, parsnip;, and beet, 9d to Is 6d a dozen bundles.
