UP IN SMOKE

V\7HEN half the field got left in Saturday’s Mitchelson Cup contest, £3,967 10s went up in smoke.

For this was the amount invested on Star Stranger, Te Kara, Valkon, Catkin, Mint Leaf, Tidal and Sir Archie.

The backers of this unlucky seven did not get a run for their money, and some of them made quite a fuss, too! Perhaps it was just as well that the first and second favourites took part in the race, for they carried nearly as much as was invested on the delinquent seven. Had Laughing Prince and Mask been left stranded at the peg, no doubt the noise would have increased pro rata!
