PLAYFUL FELLOW!
QNE of the attractions at Ellerslie on Saturday was the reappearance of Commendation in the Shorts Handicap. The big Limond gelding looked a bit burly, but he was more forward than generally expected, although he carried only one seventh of the amount invested on the favourite, Aussie. At the barrier Commendation moved in quietly, and at once backed along the tapes. Then he commenced rearing up, doing it with quiet dignity, however. One who did not appreciate the antics of the big horse was jockey Ellis, on Benzora, who was perilously close to the awe-inspiring feet, and he promptly drew his stick and drove his mount out of reach. After a few more circus tricks Commendation was led up to the barrier. The tapes were skied, and there was Commendation standing flat-footed, square on to the barrier, or rather where it had been. He took no part in the race and was trotted back to the enclosure. It was not an illuminating reappearance.
