STAR STRANGER’S SEVEN

STRANGER’S gallop over seven furlongs at Ellerslie this morning emphasises that the Martian gelding would have been very difficult to beat in the Mitchelson Cup, notwithstanding his big weight. He was acompanied by Valkon this morning, the pair moving away on terms to get over the initial furlong in 13. Increasing the pace, they registered 25 for two, the three in 39, and the half-mile in 51 1-5, eventually recording the brilliant time or 1.29 2-5 for the journey. Star Stranger drew out from his companion towards the finish, and had a couple of lengths' advantage at the end, although both were moving comfortably. The fact that he had shoes on—the majority of horses this morning galloped with plates on—considerably enhances Star Stranger’s effort, but a good word must be said for Valkon, for he occupied the outer berth. This gallop eventuated or No. 1 grass track.
