RHODES SCHOLARS
AUCKLAND NOMINEES LAWYER AND ALL BLACK The Auckland University College nominees for the 1929 Rhodes Scholarship were chosen to-day at a meeting of the Professorial Beard. Mr. E. E. Bailey, one of last year’s nominees, has been selected again, and the second nomination is Mr. P. C. Minns, the well-known footballer. Mr. Minns, who is 21 years of age, was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, matriculating in 1923. Two years later he gained a junior university scholarship, being sixth on the list for New Zealand. He is now studying for the final section of his B.A. degree.
He has a long list of athletic successes .and last year won the quarterniile championship of Auckland University College. In football he has represented his college, his province, the North Island, and New Zealand in the first test against New South Wales. He gave a brilliant display a week ago in the match between Varsity and Ponsonby, which decided the senior competition. brilliant law student Mr. Bailey, who is also aged 21, was educated at Sacred Heart College, and 13 on the threshold of a brilliant legal career. He qualified as a solicitor when 19. and became an LL.B. last Tear. This year he .is studying for his HL.M. degree. He has been a keen football player and this year was a member of the
Varsity team. In 1926 he was in the College team that went to Fiji, and he was also in the team that went there tw ° months ago. . Both men have taken an active part the social life of the college, and their selection will find favour with ••he students.
