OPENING CELEBRATIONS PAPATOETOE CLUB The official opening of the Papatoetoe Bowling and Croquet Club was held in idea! weather on Saturday.. Visitors were present representing every club in the Auckland district and some very keen games were played between teams representing the presidents and vice-presidents of the club. Messrs. C. A. Tonkin, G. Reid, P. Scantlebury and E. Wright attended representing the Auckland executive. The Papatoetoe Town Band was present and rendered a programme of musical numbers during the afternoon. Mr. T. R. Smytheman, president of the club, extended a hearty welcome to the large gathering of visitors and after calling on Mrs. Smytheman to throw the first jack, declared the green open for play for the ensuing season. PUKEKOHE CLUB Many representatives of Auckland and South Suburban clubs were present at the opening of the Pukekohe Club on Saturday. The Northern Waikato Bowling Association was also well represented, rinks being present from Tuakau. Buckland, Patumahoe and Waiuku. The club president, Mr. F. A. Hosking, delivered the opening speech and made special reference to the presence of the Auckland Centre, headed by Mr. S. Coldicutt. The president of the centre, Mr. Coldicutt, complimented the club on its enterprise in opening the season at so early a date. Mr. James Pascoe, expresident of the centre, also spoke. as a foundation member of the Pukekohe Club it gave him special pleasure to note the progressive appearance of the club’s property and surroundings. Mrs?. Hosking threw the first kitty and Mr. Hosking immediately declared the green open for the season. WAITEMATA CLUB Waitemata Club members devoted Saturday afternoon to a working bee preparatory to the official opening on October 20. The green reflects the greatest credit on the green superintendent, Mr. E. G. Fraser. The unanimous opinion is that at present it is in better order than at any other period in the club’s existence.
