MATCH AT COLOMBO CEYLON WICKETS CHEAP (United P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) COLOMBO, Saturday. The English cricketers reached Colombo early this morning, and met the Ceylon team during the day. but the match was spoiled by rain, which caused an interruption from 12 p.m. till 3 p.m. Ceylon batted first and scored 96 for the loss of seven wickets. Larwood did not impress the onlookers. Tate, although always dangerous, did not come up to expectations. White bowled the best, flighting the ball cleverly and making it turn quite a lot. He took three wickets for 44 runs, all off catches. Leyland took two for 29. Tate one for seven. Hammond one for 9, and Larwood took none for 7. The only Ceylon player to make a score was the former Middlesex cricketer, Dr. Gunasekera, who made 46. England has lost six wickets for 156 (Hobbs 54, Chapman 60). This pair in a light-hearted partnership made 101 for the first wicket in 45 minutes. Chapman hit four sixes. Hobbs amused the crowd by audaciously pulling off balls to the leg boundary. Tat© mad© 1, Ames 7, Jardine 8. Hammond 11, Leyland 13 not out. For Ceylon Horan took three for 51, and Marlands two for 33. 66 IN 16 HITS GREGORY LASHES OUT SYDNEY, Saturday. In the grade cricket matches yesterday for Waverley against Glebe Gregory made 66 in 16 hits. For Marrickville against Paddington Asher made 60 not out. For Cumberland against North Sydney Punch made 56. For University against Northern Districts G. Hogg made 66. For St. George against Gordon Louden made 102 and Bradman 107. For Balmain against Randwick Jackson made 63. Bowling for Randwick, McNamee took six for 67 and Ward two for 43. For Western Suburbs against Petersham, Long took two for 35.
