OTAKI CUP RUGBY

SHIPPING COMPANIES RETAIN TROPHY Better organisation, and a more powerful band of supporters, assisted Shipping Companies to win the annual tournament for tlie Otaki Cup. Teams representing the Customs, customhouse agents, and Harbour Board also took part, the latter team playing a few men short. Three matches were played, and though the game was decidedly ragged, the enthusiasm both, of players and spectators made up for a great deal. The Otaki Cup competition was inaugurated in memory of the steamer Otaki, which, was sunk in the early days of the war after an heroic fight. On the first gam© played, also, hangs the fat© of the Shipping and Customhouse Shield, which was again won by Shipping Companies by S points to

Latta and Davies scored for Shipping, and Aitken converted a try. Customs’s only try was scored and converted by Thom, wlio was thel ife of the losing team, and seemed to be everywhere.

The other preliminary resulted in a win for Customhouse Agents against Harbour Board by 8 points to 5, after a closely contested struggle. Nicholson scored two tries for the winners, and Graham converted one. Beattie notched on© for the Board, and McCarthy converted it.

Both teams showed signs of the hard games already played when they lined out for the final, and Shipping Companies were lucky to weather the storm. Thanks to their backs, who had the better idea of combination, however, they won by 9 points to 3. O’Leary, who played a nippy game for the agents, put the winners in trouble occasionally, and only determined tackling by Aitken and his men kept the elusive agei»t out. Fletcher, Angell, and Jalfon scored for Shipping, and Stewart, Marathon’s fleet winger, hoisted a try for the Agents. WAIHI BEATS PAEROA HARD, CLOSE GAME (From Our Own Correspondent) WAIHI, Sunday. The football season was brought to a close in Waihi on Saturday with the final for the Frank Poland Memorial Cup, between Waihi and Paeroa representatives. Waihi won by 3 points to nil. Played under ideal conditions, the game was hard-fought, but furnished very little of a spectacular nature. The forwards predominated throughout, and only on rare occasions did the backs of either side get going. Ten minutes after the game started Waihi was awarded a penalty kick for an offside infringement, from which Johns scored, registering the only points of the match. Waihi was slightly the better team, having more of the game in the first half and an equal share in the second half. The return of Price to the Wailii front rank turned the balance in favour of the local forwards, and his presence just about made the difference between victory and defeat. Snodgrass also played a fine game, and for a lad of his inches gets through an enormous amount of work. Walters, Saunders, Dillimore, Thornton, Hume and Craig also played well for Waihi. For Paeroa, Lockett and McQuarters were the pick of an evenly balanced team, with Frost, Fitch and Masters playing good games. Mr. Dunstan (Waihi) was referee. The curtain rang down on the 1938 football season at Rhodes Park on Saturday. when Physical Training and City met in the knock-out cup competition. The teams mustered weak fifteens —a number of junior players being included. Physical Training had 12 points on when time was called, and City 3. The Mount Eden 111. team, from Auckland, played the Thames Juniors, who this season have had an unbeaten record, a reputation which they upheld by defeating the visitors, 14 points to 6.
