INSPECTOR COMPLAINS OF APATHY “I have tried ineffectually to wake up the business men of the Dominion to a realisation of the enormous wastage caused by fires,” said Mr. T. T. Hugo, Government Fire Inspector, at the annual conference of Fire Brigades at Onehunga on Saturday evening. “I have repeatedly communicated with the various chambers of commerce, but no action has been taken.” The annual loss in New Zealand, he said, was four times greater than in America or Canada, and amounted to nearly £1,500,000. These enormous losses were not due to the inefficiency of fire brigades, but rather to the appalling number of outbreaks, largely caused by sheer carelessness. Already a scheme was in operation for the education of children in fire prevention, and this must be systematically pushed ahead. The vital necessity for teaching the growing youth to exercise care had been fully realised in other countries.
