OPOTIKI COUNTY AFFAIRS Two valuers have been working: in the Upper Waioeka Riding-, taking: opposite sides of the river. It was stated at a special meeting: of the Opotiki County Council, held to consider possible alterations of boundaries to make rating more equitable, that land of exactly the same quality had been valued by one man at 17s 6d an acre and by the other at 2s 6d an acre. The chairman said the settlers concerned had not known of the difference in the valuations, so had not appeared before the Assessment Court. They could now appeal only by paying: two guineas. Various boundary changes were decided upon. At the ordinary meeting of the council the engineer reported that upkeep on the present lorry used for gravel carting had been £IOO more this year than last year. - *oul*i be houand would be cheaper to run than the present lorry. The engineer is to submit the various costs of the running machinery to the council. A complaint was received from the chairman of the Waimana factory regarding trouble in getting cheese away from the Kutarere Wharf. Mr. Williams had also coijinlained stating that he would have to send his wool from Opotiki. The wharfinger will be notified that unless he is prepared to carry out his contract his services will be dispensed with. The tender of Mr. J. Louden for forming and' culverting 50 chains of the Coast Road, at £3lO 13s 4d, was accepted. PUKEKOHE TOPICS Next month the Pukekohe Borough Council intends to take a poll on a proposal to borrow £5.500 for waterworks extension, including the enlarging of the mains in streets where houses have been built recently. No definite date has been fixed as yet. A section on the corner of Seddon and Victoria Streets has been bought as the site of a Baptist church. It is on the main road to Auckland, and is near the centre of the town. The church will be erected shortly in permanent materials. Over £OO was raised at the annual sale of work of the Presbyterian Church.

TAURANGA LOAN POLL A poll for loans to build a new public library and municipal baths, and to extend* the sewerage system will be takeu by the Tauranga Borough Council shortly. The sum of £2,300 will be needed for the library and £1.500 for the swimming pool in Fifth Avenue East. At a special meeting the engineer submitted a scheme providing for an extension of the sewerage system and a pumping station and outfall pipes to tb* Waikareao Estuary, at an estimated cost of £13,040. Further estimates to include additional areas be jireparcd. Bro. W. Grubb, District Grand Master of the Oddfellows’ Order, paid an official visit to the lodge here on Friday evening, and was received with lodge honours. He gave an interesting address on the general condition of Oddfellowship throughout the district. He referred to the new block of buildings in Auckland for the order, and predicted it would prove a splendid investment. * * * The commissioner, Mr. F. Boyd, attended the weekly parade of the Boy Scouts on Friday evening. There was a good muster of Scouts. After addressing the boys the commissioner presented the following badges:—lst Class, Ken. Mackrell; 2nd Class, Win. Jones, Jack James and Allan Tanner; ambulance. Wm. Jones; and entertainment, Allan Tanner. Mr. Reed has taken up the work of ambulance instruction and gave his first lecture. The boys are looking forward to their annual camp and are now actively engaged in raising the necessary funds. ASSESSMENT COURT SITTING A special sitting of the Assessment Court at Te Awamutu on Friday in a claim for £IOO damages against the Public W orks Department by Louis Theodore Bergemann was adjourned until November 8 to enable Mr. IT. A. S war brick, who appeared for plaintiff, to consult certain authorities. The court comprised Air. Wyvern Wilson, S.M. (chairman), and Messrs. J. T. Johnson (for claimant) and W. A. Gordon (for the department). Mr. Bould (land purchase officer) appeared for the department. MUSEUM FOR TAIHAPE. That a museum should be established at Taihape was decided at a meeting last Friday evening. The Maoris aro taking ix keen interest, and some have promised relics of types which, they assert, have never before been seen by the pakoha. WAIUKU SUMMER SHOW A special meeting of the Waiuku Horticultural and Industrial Society was held in the Wesley lla(l on Friday evening, the president, Air. C. Butt!more, presiding over about 24 members. Air. A. Fitchett was elected secretary and treasurer in place of Mr. L. Doull. who resigned recently. Alessrs. C. J. West and R. S. Naylor were empowered to attend to all correspondence with reference to the recent kennel and poultry show. It was resolved that the summer show will be held on Wednesday October 11, and that Airs. G. V. Williams. Alessrs. AI. G. Brown, J. A. Blake, H. M. Barnhall, the president and secretary arrange the schedules. X-RAY PLANT FOR OPOTIKI At a meeting of the Opotiki Hospital Board on Saturday, Mr. TI. R. Hogg, presiding, Nurse Alcllwralth was appointed district maternity nurse. A circular from the Hospital Board Association suggested that all hospital nurses be allowed two days’ leave in each month. This is already being done as far as possible. The engineer reported that the contractors have been instructed to install an X-ray plant at a cost of £916. The board received notification of the new water charges made by the Opotiki Borough Council. Arrangements had i been made for a supply up to March 31, 1929, and the charges were paid in advance, so it was maintained that no alteration could have effect during that period. A loan of £SOO has been received frem the Public Trustee for improvements to the hospital. CHILDREN’S CAMP LEAGUE The following have? been elected officers of the Waikato Childrens Camp League, which gave 100 poor children a i ten-days’ holiday at the seaside last B summer: President, Hon.
