ESTHONIAN’S SYDNEY SHOP Six months ago in Reval, capital or the Republic of Esthonia, most northerly of all the Baltic provinces, Madame Emilie Promet gazed for the last time on her national flag of blue, black and -white, and then turned her eyes in the direction of the Southern Cross. To-day, the widow lady from Reval, whose husband was killed in Austria 16 years ago, has become the only woman barber of Campbell Street. Sydney. In a little hairdresser’s shop on the corner of Riley Street and Campbell Street, Madame Promet. reigns. Customer’s Shock It was a shock for her iirst customer, whose heavy beard hall-marked him a real he-man of Surrey Hills, when, having called for a shave, he gaped as Madame lathered him, stropped her razor, and got to business. Madame as yet knows little English—thus the peace in her saloon. Rut she is learning rapidly. Possibly there will come the day, when, having thoroughly mastered the aC of Australian conversation, she, too, like her brothers of scissar» comb and razor, will tip the winne'S for her ever-increasing number of customers.
