ELECTION DAY-WHEN?
AVOIDING CANTERBURY FESTIVAL AFTER NOVEMBER 17 (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Friday. “The Minister of Lands may smile, but I assure the House it is a serious matter,” said Sir Joseph Ward, in asking the Prime Minister to-day if he would make sure that the date of the elections does not clash with the dates for the Canterbury Show, which would, he said, be attended by people from all parts of the North Island. Mr. Coates said one solution would be to hold the elections well before the show. Sir Joseph Ward: Have them next week. Mr. W. E. Parry: Have them right away. The sooner the better. Mr. Coates assured the House that the elections would either be before the show or after. (Laughter.) Mr. Armstrong: Won’t you have the elections at the show? Mr. Coates: We will not hold the elections in show week. It will be either just before or just afterwards. Mr. L. G. Sullivan: What about the Manawatu Show? Mr. Coates: I have had no representations from there. Sir Joseph Ward said the Canterbury Show would conclude on November 17, so presumably the elections would be held after that.
