S and L’. and .1. 1.. Blank (Otoroliansa > beat W UMine. . and I. Neither result was unexpected. Blank, against Hamilton's number j one man. played as much tlio better , golf as the score indicates. His driving was longer, though not so well placed as Wynne's, and his short play was considerably better. Two mistakes j—a second into a bunker at the third j hole and three putts on the fifth saw Wynne 2 down. He was too far with ; the second at the next and was three • down. Black holed a chip short for a win at the next, and was four up. Wynne won the 9th and 10th, but went out when Black followed with 4. 4, 4. ! (iillies was at sea with his long game ; and Stichbury appeared frightened to hit his approach shots after overrunning pin at first- The first four holes were halved in boged. A brilliant half in two followed, Stichbury being then dorniy I four and winning at 16th. YESTERDAY’S PLAY i The first day of mutch-play yesterday saw J. L. Black, Otorobanga, \\ . Wynne, Hamilton, H. Gillies, Hamil--1 ton, and A. A. Stichbury, Wellington. I left in the South Auckland golf championship. I The entries did not total 50 and the j tournament is progressing splendidly. Entries for the ladies’ open tourney, j which starts on Monday, have reached the huge total of 136. The links are in i as good a condition as when the New ! Zealand championships were played here. J. L. Black went very close to elimination in the second round yesterday, when he met C. Brittain, of Rotorua. To use Black’s own expression, his opponent was “using it one-ton driver and hitting them a mile.” The pair came to the 13th square, und Black won it. The 14th. a very short hole, saw an as yet unsolved happening. Black bunkered his shot and his caddie walked into the bunker, where Black’s ball was at rest on grass, and leaving a niblick, walked away to the green. Black coming up saw the position and considered lu* had lost the hole. The IS holes were played out, but Black won one up without the disputed hole, so the committee was not colled upon to solve « rather unusual point of rules. R. O. Gardner, playing excellent golf, defaulted to H. Gillies, as he had to return to Auckland. W. Wynne had an easy win. J. Hockin, the remaining Aucklander, became dorniy three down to A. A. Stichbury, who is playing excellent golf. Hockin. with a desperate effort, won the next two, but a half at the 18th put liiin out. DETAILED RESULTS The bogey handicap in the afternoon was won by H.
