ANOTHER CHANCE?
ACCORDING to The Sun’s Parliamentary representative, there are reports current in the lobbies at Wellington that there is an even chance of the daylight-saving proposals being resuscitated in a slightly amended form. If this is done, it will be in response to the select committee’s recommendation that a half-hour compromise be adopted throughout the country. Strong opponents to the original measure—Mr. Glenn, Mr. Samuel, and others—have agreed to support the modified scheme, and if the Government decides to permit the introduction of a Bill there is a chance that the New Zealand public may again enjoy, in a measure, daylight saving. The local schemes present many difficulties, and a modified Summer Time Act would be gladly accepted by those who appreciated the extra hours of daylight in the summer months last year. In all probability, too, the Bill in its new form would not arouse the hostility which, in some quarters, faced the original Act. Tens of thousands of New Zealanders will express the hope that the Government will give the House a chance to vote on the select committee’s proposal. It would certainly be a very bright measure with which to close a very dull session.
