The 10,000-metre championship of the Olympic Games. Willie Ritola (No, 800) leads Paavo Nurmi (No. 797), and E. Wide (No. 866). Nurmi's right hand is clenched over his stop-watch. Wide, of Sweden, always has a handkerchief wound round his outside hand. Ritola’s face, with its high cheekbones, prominent teeth, and slightly-receding chin, show more signs ot exhaustion than he really felt. Nurmi ran a little out from the pole, ir the straight, to make sure that Wide should not get past easily and take the lead.
