CITY FATHERS’ WISDOM

NOT HIGHLY RESPECTED BRIDGE ASSOCIATION’S COMMENT Comment by members of the General Committee of the Auckland Harbour Bridge Association last evening on an opinion on the bridge scheme, sent in by the Auckland City Council, was brief, but pointed. The council considered that construction at the present time was not warranted, but the bridge scheme could be investigated at some future date. “This is the wisdom of our city fathers,” remarked Mr. J. O’Halloran, who was In the chair. “The only thing we need do is to receive 'the letter.” “The council's letter would have been quite in order 40 years ago,” was the Opinion of another committee member. Support to the proposal was given in letters from the Pukeatua Riding Ratepayers’ Association and the Hamilton branch of the Auckland Automobile Association. FATE OF PETITION Mr. O’Halloran gave a report on the reception by a Parliamentary committee to a deputation sponsoring the bridge. The committee’s decision would be available shortly, and it was awaited with confidence. “Until we get this information,” said Mr. O’Halloran, “we will stay our hands. Whether the answer is favourable or not, the committee will meet to devise a campaign. I consider that the support we have received north and South of Auckland Is greater than our expectations. Criticism has affected us very slightly—in fact, a certain amount will do the association good.” Mr. Frank W. Grigg suggested that a Government commission regarding fhe bridge would be welcome. Mr. O’Halloran had Mr. Grigg’s suggestion noted, but said it would be advisable to discover if the Government Was with the association. On the motion of Mr. Grigg, a letter k) to be sent to the Main Highways .Board, asking for sympathy and supVort The letter will point out that a harbour bridge would make a u quicker northward route. St "T* l ® names of 42 new members were \m placed on the register.
