Two Hotel-Keepers Fined Over £loo
WATER IN LIQUOR PROSECUTIONS AT THAMES Press Association THAMES, To-day. That he had added 40 per cent, of water to brandy and 35.6, 34 and 26.5 per cent, to whisky and gin respectively was admitted by John Kelly, a hotelkeeper of Thames, in the Magistrate’s Court this morning: Counsel for the prosecution, Mr. V. N. Hubble, characterised it as the worst case he had had, and the Health Department had had many bad ones. There were seven charges, four under the Licensing Act, and three under the Pure Foods Act. Finally, the Crown agreed to substitute two under the Pure Foods Act for two under the Licensing Act, for which the minimum penalty is £2O. Mr. F. W. Platts, S.M., stating that the offence was a very serious one, fined Kelly a total of £ 50, with costs totalling £l3 14s. Another hotel proprietor, Walter Bell, was charged with similar offences. He added 27.8 and 12.8 per cent of water. He was fined £4O and costs £9 2s.
