BABIES’ CLASSIC
WELCOME STAKES RIDERS There will be eight runners in the two-year-old classic at Ellerslie tomorrow. Here they are, with the jockeys engaged for them: WELCOME STAKES Of £1,000; 5 furlongs Ceremony (B. H. Morris) .. . . 8.5 First Money (R. McTavish) .... 8.5 Carl Idem (R. Hall) 8.5 Supremacy (T. Metcalf) 8.5 Hunting Day (A. Tinker) 8.5 Eaglet (J. Barry) S.O Clever (S. Henderson) 8.0 Golden Measure ( ) 8.0 Generally a visiting horse finds it a hard task to win over either hurdles or country at his initial appearance at Ellerslie. Such proved the case with First Prince at the Pakuranga meeting last week, for although his opponents in the Hunters’ Hurdles were only moderates, the best he could do was a close third. I-Ie carried 10.8 on that occasion, but 9.4 is his lot in the Trial Hurdles on Saturday, and notwithstanding that the field is much better, he should be capable of improvement on his recent effort.
